Poisoned by Plastic
Introduction
Commercial bottled water were found to contain as many as 24,520 chemicals. A majority of these chemicals interfere with hormonal system, especially those regulating reproductive and developmental activities.
German researchers analysed samples from 18 bottled water products using bioassay and high-resolution mass spectrometry. They found 13 samples had chemicals that inhibit the activity of female hormone, estrogen and 16 had chemicals that affect male hormone, androgen.
An anti-estrogen chemical, di(2-ethylhexyl) fumarate or DEHF, was particularly present in high amounts. DEHF is used to make plastic more flexible. Its use remains unregulated.
