Fire Proof Thatched Roof
Introduction
Most of our village population lives in huts with thatched roofs. These roofs have to be generally renewed every year. Besides, in the hot summer months, these roofs are prone to catch fire easily. Destruction of huts by fire and the agony of the families who have lost all their meager belongings is a common occurrence in the villages. Burning of one hut usually does not just stop with that, but the fire spreads to a group of huts, and sometimes a whole village is affected.
A fire proof thatched rood has been developed which avoids such type of burning. The roof is also safe against storms and lashing rains. It has a life of at least five years, as against one year for the traditional thatched roof. The cost of this fire proof roof is only about 50% more than that of the conventional thatched roof. The increased expenditure is more than compensated, by the longevity of the fire proof thatched roof.
In the process, non-erodable mud plaster is applied to both sides of the thatched and dried. If cracks appear after dying, they are sealed off with the same plaster. Over the thatch, a few costs of bitumen mixed with kerosene are applied and finally cow-dung paste in water is coated.
