Negatively Charged Prostheses and Products
Introduction
Coronary angioplasty, the technique of opening of chocked arteries of the heart , is the most important therapeutic procedure for avoiding open heart surgery. The major drawback of this technique is the propensity of the dilated artery to close abruptly and also the tendency for the recurrence of obstruction. Though, intravascular metallic stents are implanted for overcoming these drawbacks, acute thrombosis has not been totally eliminated. Further, due to initiation of complex interaction between blood components and the metallic surface of the implanted stent, the chances of thrombosis increase because of deposition of proteins and other blood cells on the stent surface. Presently used methods such as polymer coating, incorporation of thrombogenic drugs or substance in polymer coating of the stent do not eliminate the said complex interaction completely. From this point of view, a new method of preparing the prosthesis i.e. metallic stent has been developed as described below.
Description
The method comprises two steps, wherein the first step involves coating of the prosthesis and the second step involves charging i.e. negative charging of the coated prosthesis. In the first step the coating material, preferably a low density material is dissolved in an aromatic solvent at a specified temperature for preparing the coating solution. The solution is maintained at this temperature and the prosthesis is coated by dipping into this solution in hot condition for a specific period. The coated prosthesis is subsequently taken out, heated at a higher temperature than that of the solution and tested for coating characteristics such as uniformity, thickness, etc. During the second step, the coated prosthesis is placed on a metal platform and exposed to the beam of electron, the negatively charged beam generated under a positive potential of 1.5 to 2.5 kV, preferably under a scroton unit. The prosthesis is continuously rotated to have uniform charging. Negative charge gets deposited on to the coated prosthesis which can be assessed by any known method.
Special Features
Enables effective implantation of metallic stents in the coronary angioplasty procedure Complex reactions between blood components and the metallic surface leading to increased chances of thrombosis is taken care of , A simple and easy method of coating is adopted.
