Introduction

Indian research & development organisation offers the technology of Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR)- vaccine. IBR is an economically important disease which is common in cattle and is caused by Bovine Herpes Virus - 1 (BHV 1). If cattle get infected with this disease, it may cause severe losses to the farmers. The IBR vaccine is an oil based vaccine and therefore safe. It produces quick, long lasting immunity to the vaccinated animal. The cost of the vaccine with imported source is approx US$ 1.0 per dose. The product to be produced with this technology is expected to be substantially low dose.

Area of Application

Pharmaceutical industry, veterinary medicine: The vaccine can protect cattle from various clinical syndromes and diseases caused by this virus such as respiratory disease, genital disorders, infectious pustular vulvovaginitis in heifers, cows, she-buffaloes and infectious pustular balanoposthitis in bulls, abortion infections of eyes and in nervous system, digestive system, skin, etc.

Advantages

At present only one firm is manufacturing IBR vaccine in India under the licence from the organistion and till recently the product was mostly imported from Europe, USA etc. Moreover, since the disease is caused by a virus (BHV1), hence there is no therapeutic control of the disease except preventive vaccination.

Development Status
