Quarternized Peptide
Technology Description
The technology is a manufacturing process of modifying proteinaceous material to make quaternized peptides for being incorporated in cosmetic formulations such as hair shampoo and face creams etc.
If incorporated in shampoo formulations, it provides (a) nourishment to hair and (b) improved hair gloss after shampooing (rectifies split end problem of hair). If used in face cream, it helps to retain skin moisture and enhances skin softness. The peptide mixes well with commonly used detergents used in hair shampoo. The compound is self-preserved and does not support growth of bacteria/molds. Therefore it does not spoil when used in cosmetic formulations. It's chemical structure has been confirmed by proton magnetic resonance study. Animal studies have proven it to be non-toxic to skin.
Specific Features
- The size of the molecule is 7.5.(Kilo-Dalton)
- The protein is not cross bonded. It is in a random structure, linked to a quaternary moiety, which is not sugar based.
- The source of protein is gelatin; however, other sources of protein e.g. milk and wheat can be used.
- The peptide is obtained by enzymatic hydrolysis, having molecular weight of 7.5.K.D. It is not a synthetic peptide with a particular sequence.
- Regarding allergic reaction potential: Following Draize assessment and scoring system, an evaluation of the degree of dermal toxicity was conducted. The results suggested that the quaternized gel has zero degree of skin irritation/skin corrosion potential and therefore could be used topically for commercial purposes. It is practically non toxic as L.D50>10 Gm./Kg. body wt. if administered orally .
- As for the anti-fungal/microbial properties: Lethal dose for microbes including fungus has not yet been ascertained. However it has been observed that the product (33% aqueous solution) remained unaffected by bacteria / fungus since no haziness or fungal growth was observed even after one and a half years of storage at ambient conditions (25 c).
