Ionically Charged Collagen Sponge
Introduction
The polar sites of collagen are modified using charged ligands under inert atmosphere to prepare ionically charged collagen solution, which is cast into sponge of desired shape and size after incorporating foaming agent, cross linker and drugs. The product has enormous application for treating wounds of ionic nature. Thus it is finds effective use as corneal shield in opthalmological treatment. The porous nature of the product allows faster tissue growth. The soluble collagen solution, obtained as an intermediate, is used in cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries.
