Canal India

Introduction

It is a Decision Support System (DSS) for irrigation water management. A comprehensive generic computer application system has been formulated by integrating GIS, remote sensing and RDBMS technologies for computer aided irrigation management decision support systems to help the water managers. It is recognized that proper scheduling of irrigation can increase water utilization efficiency in agriculture. Irrigation water requirements are influenced by climate, soil, crop type, stage of growth, method of irrigation, pas and forecast rainfall etc. Further, the area under each crop, status of soil and irrigation system capacities determines the volume of water that is to be delivered by the irrigation system at any time. Thus, scheduling of irrigations require continuous monitoring of the crop situation, rainfall and climatic conditions vis-à-vis the water supply conditions. In large systems, where the project extends several thousand hectares, all the above factors (such as type of soils, crops, climate, etc.) exhibit high variability both in time and space. This renders monitoring as well as subsequent decision making process for irrigation system highly complex. The developed interactive computer software integrates these components and provides a highly userfriendly interface to map any irrgation system for monitoring and opration

Salient features

Facility to map the irrigation system using GIS, Mapping of all canals, control stuructures above and below outlet commands, Mapping can be down to the plat and field level, Map Objects software has been used to enable the end-user to use the application without having a GIS package.
