Acoustic Liquid Fuel Burners
Introduction
A new design of industrial liquid fuel burner, called Acoustic Liquid Fuel Burner, has been developed which would be used in the metallurgical industry where high pressure air atomised burners with a long flames of about 8 to 12 meters length for the reheating of liquid metals in rotary furnaces, etc., and with 4 to 8 metres length for boilers, having bushy type of geometry are required. In this new design the acoustic waves are utilised to atomise the liquid fuels in a more efficient manner which results several advantages. Presently high pressure air atomised burners or centrifugal burners are being used by the metallurgical industries, but these burners not only having high cost, but also require high operating and maintenance cost.
The new acoustic burners have been tested In place of these burners in Hindustan Copper Ltd., Ghatshila and in Rourkela Steel plant, and found that it can replace the conventional burners very successfully with a appreciable percentage of oil saving. Test results at Hindustan Copper Ltd., Ghatsila, India showed that fuel saving to the extend of 23% have been achieved.
The major advantages of the burners are
Acoustic burner requires low air pressure as well as low oil pressure for atomisation. Due to finer atomisation (Mean particle size 20 mm. in the cause of fuel oil) better combustion takes place resulting in reduction in excess air requirement from 31% to 6% . High flame temperature achieved, boosting the heat pick up faster by the metal. The fuel saving upto 23% is achieved. The acoustic burners give the desirable flame geometry and characteristics as required by industrial furnaces.
