Canned Motor for Pump

  • Canned motors are Special prime movers used to drive centrifugal pumps under submerged condition.
  • No Seal between pump and motor.
  • Stator and Rotor canned with SS cans.
  • Stator potting with high conductivity potting compound.
  • Pumping liquid lubricates and cools motor. This is achieved by auxiliary impeller at the bottom.
  • Special Glass to Metal Seal for power connection.
  • Rotating and stationary parts of journal and thrust bearing are made of Tungsten Carbide & Ceramic respectively.

Introduction

Canned Motors are specifically designed prime movers used to drive centrifugal type of pumps, under sub-merged condition. Pumping liquid goes inside the motor also. There is no seal between the motor and the pump. There is no leakage of liquid to the outside atmosphere. These canned motors for pumps are extensively used in chemical & nuclear industry where costly, hazardous or radioactive fluids are handled. The pump is conventional one made of S.S. The special kind of bush bearings used have pumping fluid itself as lubricant and coolant. An auxiliary impeller is used to cool stator & rotor of the motor. Special Glass to Metal Seal is used for taking power connection to the stator winding. The stator and rotor are canned with SS cans. The stator is potted with epoxy so as to provide backing to the stator can. The thermal conductivity of epoxy is increased by adding silica granules. Special care is taken for welding cans of dissimilar thicknesses by using TIG or EB welding.
