Organic Farming

Introduction

Contamination of farm produce by chemical pesticides and fertilizer residues has been a matter of serious concern, particularly in the developed countries where intensive cultivation on scare land had encouraged excessive use of chemical pest control agents and nutrients during the last fifty years. A part from adversely affecting the flora and fauna, this has also eroded soil and ground water quality by increasing the nitrate concentration arising from nitrogenous chemical fertilizers. The increasing awareness of the deleterious effects of indiscriminate artificial inputs in agriculture has led to serious thinking on alternate eco-friendly and sustainable use of land for cultivation, particularly of edible crops. The concept and practice of organic farming is a direct outcome of the above concern. The northeastern region offers a great potential for quick development of organic farms, firstly because of the good agro climatic conditions, many rich variety of horticulture crops grow.
