Fly ash based mosquito larvicidal formulations of Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (serotype H14)
Technology Description
This invention relates to the preparation of mosquito larvicidal formulations using fly ash as carrier material. The active ingredient is the delta endotoxin present in the spore- crystal complex (SCC) of Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis, serotype H14 (strain VCRC B 17), which is a known mosquito larvicide and process for its large scale production is already available (Indian Patent # 192 055). The spore-crystal complex (SCC) obtained by submerged fermentation is mixed with fly ash and different binding and floating agents to obtain three formulations, viz., Water Dispersible Powder (WDP), slow release floating briquettes (BR) and slow release granular (GR) formulations. These formulations were found to be effective in killing the larval stages of different species of mosquitoes. Further, they exhibited varied levels of residual activity depending on the habitat, type of water etc. It is Cost effective as uses by- product of coal mines, power plants
Institution: VCRC
Category : Formulation
Cost effective : Cost effective as the production of bacterial mass uses locally available cheap raw materials and formulation uses flyash as carrier material which is a waste product from coal mines
In vivo studies : Not relevant as formulation targets mosquitoes
Life of Patent : Not yet granted
Validation : Need to inquire inventor
Prototype: Pilot scale
Public health relevance : Very significant relates to the preparation of mosquito larvicidal formulation comprising of fly ash and Spore crystal complex of Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis along with specific additives to obtain three formulations viz. Water Dispersible powder (WDP), slow release floating briquettes (BR) and slow release granular (GR) formulations. These formulations are very effective in killing larval stages of different species of mosquitoes .
