Centre for Marine Living Resource and Ecology (CMLRE) at Kochi
Union Minister for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Dr. Harsh Vardhan has said that CENTRE FOR MARINE LIVING RESOURCE AND ECOLOGY should grow as a National Centre to coordinate all spheres relating to the sector and to develop the country's ecosystem based management strategies relating to the seas. He was speaking to senior scientists/officers of CMLRE at Kakanad, Kochi during his recent visit. The Minister showed keen interest in understanding the scientific activities with regard to Marine Living Resources (MLR).
Dr. Harsh Vardhan was apprised about the MLR activities, referring the exhibited deep-sea samples/aliquots, including the species new to science, new records and rare samples. Director CMLRE, Dr. M. Sudhakar and Senior Scientist, Shri.N. Saravanane explained the organizational structure, infrastructure including the status of the new campus and the new Fishery Oceanography Research Vessel (FORV) to replace the existing FORV Sagar Sampada, international collaborations and major scientific achievements made by the Centre.
In his remarks, the Minister extended all his support for strengthening the infrastructure development in terms of sufficient manpower, new research vessel and new building. The Minister also expressed his interest in participating a short scientific cruise onboard FORV Sagar Sampada, to experience the research activities onboard.
