Introduction

Rope which has a variety of uses in every day life is made from different types of fibre like jute, flax, hemp, coir, pineapple etc. The rope is usually made in villages manually in a laborious manner, involving considerable amount of drudgery.

In order to eliminate the drudgery, provide employment opportunities and enhance the earning capacity of the rural population, a simple rope making machine using easily available sewing machine parts and bicycle components has been designed. The machine can be easily operated by sitting on a stool by simple pedaling as in a sewing machine. Its maintenance is easy.

Using the machine a person can produce 5-10 Kg per hr. Of rope per day as against the 500-700 gm by the manual methods in vogue. It can provide self employment to women and children in villages, who can earn Rs. 15-20 per day by making ropes, sutlis etc. from easily available and inexpensive fibrous materials.

It is understood that the use of this machine is receiving encouragement from Khadi and Villlage Industries Board/Commission, Rural Development Programme, S.C. & S.T. Development Scheme and Nationalized rural banks. The cost of the machine is Rs.2000/-.
