Introduction

The above technology is based on polystyrene (PS) and their derivatives were well designed. They were synthesised by polymerization of specially prepared styrene monomers to be a desirable material as biomaterials for human contact. The polymers were fully characterized. Cell culture results indicate that our novel polymers containing the special group are non-toxic. They also mimic cell requirements and encourage human cell growth, eg. human osteoblasts, fibroblasts and red blood cells. Also they exhibit thermotropic smectic A (Sa) liquid crystallinity. Moreover, the polymers can form high quality ultrathin films onto substrates e.g. metallic or glassy substrate for some specific applications. To get well organized multilayer structure Langmuir-Blodgett film technique can be applied.

Area of Application

Medicine and pharmaceuticals

Advantages

The materials are non-toxic and biocompatible to human tissue. Sterilisation methods such as gamma irradiation are able to be applied without any effect to the material properties.
