Introduction

Controlled release technology is emerging as an important tool for increasing the effectiveness of biologically active materials. This technology can be used in treatment of a number of diseases such as glaucoma, motion sickness, etc. The technology can also be used for dental therapy, antifertility, deliver of hormones/enzymes, cancer therapy and immunization. The aim of a controlled delivery system is to obtain the release of an active agent at a required rate, meeting the therapeutic need. This technology has been developed for controlled releases ferrous sulphate that can be designed for both oral iron therapy and parenteral iron - therapy for treatment of iron Sustained release of ferrous sulphate from gum pellets has been achieved. Release can further be sustained for 12 - 600 hours by coating the pellets with polyvinyl acetate & ethylene acetate respectively.
