Technology Description

This technology, holistic biotreatment of pulp and paper waste water, is a bacterial isolate and the process for preparing the bacterial isolate to be used for treatment of waste water from Pulp & Paper mills. In other words the invention consists of bacteria that are grown and used exclusively to treat Pulp & Paper waste water and the process to obtain said bacteria. The users of the technology are Pulp & Paper mills that generate waste water. The technology is invented by Dr. Rita Kumar from the Institute of Genomics and Integrated Biology (IGIB). The technology can be used in existing Pulp & Paper waste water treatment facilities.

The bacteria can be grown onsite at Pulp & Paper mills by using a fermentor, filtration unit and lyophilizer (unit used for freeze drying) or at waste water treatment service companies. Investment in this equipment would likely require that several mills be served thus a Pulp & Paper Mill Company would have to operate several mills to justify the investment. Freeze drying of the bacteria isolate would be used for storage and ease of transportation to the actual treatment facilities. The Pulp & Paper mill that uses the invention does not have to invest in additional equipment (except as noted above if so desired.) The existing waste water treatment facilities can be used with the invention without any modifications.

The state-of-the-art (SOA) technology is activated sludge treatment. The differentiation of the invention is the customization of or creation of the bacteria to specifically target Pulp & Paper waste water streams constituents such as color, BOD (biological oxygen demand), COD (chemical oxygen demand), lignin (chemical found in wood from which paper is made), and AOX (adsorvable organic halides).
