Bilirubin Strip

Introduction

Infective hepatitis, commonly known as Jaundice, is endemic in many areas of the country. In big cities, contamination of drinking water has created a chronic hazard in this respect. Therefore, there is an urgent need for a simple and cheap method for detecting the onset of the disease in the early stages. A very early indication of infective hepatitis is the appearance of the bile pigment bilirubin in urine. The Chemistry Division has developed a simple, cheap and reliable strip for the quick detection of bilirubin in urine. With this strip, detection of bilirubin takes less than half a minute compared with the 20 minutes required for the conventional method. The test can be performed by untrained persons. This strip can be used in any hospital, primary health centre or private clinic including those in rural areas for early detection of liver dysfunction including infective hepatitis. It is also be useful for monitoring infective hepatitis occurring in epidemic form.
