Personnel Monitoring

  • Monitoring means measurements related to the assessment and control of exposure due to ionizing radiation and radioactive materials.
  • Personnel Monitoring relates to making of measurements by equipment (Thermoluminescent Dosimeter, TLD) carried on the person of radiation worker. This information is useful in limiting radiation doses to the radiation workers.
  • Personnel monitoring services has been provided by BARC since 1956, to all radiation workers in India to monitor external doses received from X, beta, gamma radiations and neutrons.

With advancement of science, use of radioisotopes in industry, health and agriculture has considerably increased. In order to meet the increasing requirements of PMS, it has become necessary to decentralize the services. Hence, the need for accreditation arises.

Accreditation

  • The purpose of this accreditation is to disseminate the technical knowledge for carrying personnel dosimetry by competent laboratories and to ensure quality of PMS by constant evaluation of performance and periodic review of internal quality assurance of the accredited laboratories.
  • A booklet has been made which describes the detailed operational and technical requirements to be met by laboratories desiring accreditation. The booklet contains an application format for seeking accreditation, pre-accreditation requirements, performance tests, deficiency notification and resolution, grant of accreditation and details of post-accreditation responsibilities of laboratory.
  • The scientific support for the accreditation programme is being provided by Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai.

The Accredited laboratory shall meet all the stringent requirements of equipment, staff, training and undergo thorough evaluation of the scientific & technical handling capabilities and proficiency test by BARC as per procedures set by AERB. The laboratory shall strictly operate under the supervision of BARC for quality control & quality assurance.
