Introduction

This Ministry has taken up projects for the development and demonstration of electric vehicles (EVs), with rechargeable batteries and fuel cells as a power source. EVs are non-polluting, make no-noise and conserve oil and petroleum products.

MNES is giving emphasis to the development of advanced, maintenance-free valve regulated lead acid, NiMH and lithium ion polymer electrolyte batteries and fuel cells especially for EVs. NiMH prototype batteries using indigenously available alloys have been developed for two-wheelers.The demonstration programme on battery operated passenger vehicles (BOPVs) taken up through state nodal agencies and departments implementing the renewable energy programme provides Central Financial Assistance on BOPVs.
