Introduction

Glyco - conjugates are molecules in which sugars are linked to amines, alkyl and protein molecules. Many of these are biologically important as cell surface receptors, as molecules involved in cell - cell recognition, cell - drug recognition processes. Enzymatic synthesis of these special molecules provides alternative routes to conventional medicine. We have shown applications of a new recombinant E. coli expressed b-glucosidase in the synthesis of these of these molecules. Many novel oligosaccharides, alkyl glucosides of commercial importance have been synthesised using this enzyme under laboratory conditions.
