Introduction

Gossypol is a toxic phenolic compound naturally present in the cottonseed, which makes the cottonseed oil and deoiled cake unfit for human and animal consumption if present beyond the tolerable limits. Due to its toxic effect it is desirable to keep its contents in the desired limit in cottonseed oil / deoiled cottonseed cake for human / animal consumption.

The system for the measurment of gossypol is based on Lambert-Beer's law. It employs a light source (635nm LED) ,sample holding system, detector, and current to voltage converter, log amplifier, 3½ digit display. The color of the gossypol complex is greenish which is being developed after extracting the gossypol from oil sample. The absorbance value of this complex is directly proportional to the concentration of gossypol, which can be read on LCD.
