Introduction

Cold slaughtered meat is considered to be unfit for human consumption. In the absence of proper antemortem inspection, it is difficult to defect the cold slaughtered meat or the meat from the animal at the death point. A simple test has been developed in DFRL to detect the cold slaughtered meat within 5 minutes. The test kit contains the reagent coated paper strip, a screw capped tube / bottle, small knife and a forsceps. One reagent strip is added into the tube / bottle containing about 10ml (less than half the bottle) of potable water and a small piece of. meat to be tested (approx. 1 gm) and shaken well. In 2 min the colour of the water turns greenish (dirty green) from blue, which change to colourless and finally pink when kept for long period, if the meat is from dead or dying animal. This test could be performed under field conditions requiring no lab facility and skilled / trained worker.
